Providing Water for Black Rhinos
Holtzman Wildlife Foundation made a $60,000 grant to Save the Rhinos International to help provide water resources for the black rhino in Kenya. Save the Rhinos is working with its partner the Borana Conservancy, a Kenyan nonprofit organization on this project.
The Conservancy has several dams and water holes to capture rainwater, but the growing number of Black Rhinos has increased the pressure on the existing resources. This has resulted in intra-species competition affecting the region’s carrying capacity.
The funded project will construct or replace nearly 10km of pipelines and drill new wells. The “water reticulation” project will greatly expand the region’s ability to support Black Rhinos.
